When faced with the threat of eviction, where can an older Ohioan turn to understand her rights and make a plan of action?
When Lucille received the letter from the new property management company, it stated that she was behind on her rent and it threatened her with eviction. She notified her daughter Tracey, and they called Pro Seniors’ Legal Helpline.
When veteran Anthony Mason, age 99, realized that two checks were missing from his checkbook, he notified his bank. The bank told Mr. Mason that the checks were written to a Judy B. for a total of nearly $3,000. A paid caregiver, Ms. B. used the checks to steal from Mr. Mason. The bank advised Mr. Mason to file a police report, and said they would not refund the money because he “failed to protect his checkbook.” Mr. Mason’s neighbor suggested that he call Pro Seniors.
A Pro Seniors Helpline attorney explained the bank’s responsibility, advised Mr. Mason on wording to use in a certified letter to the bank, and outlined other steps he could take with the home health agency.
Mr. Mason followed the Helpline attorney’s advice and, in less than a month, the bank returned the funds to Mr. Mason’s account.
